About this walk

Start in the small Wildlife Trust car park off Brampton Road, west of Brampton. Enter the wood beside the information shelter and follow the eastern woodland paths north. The route bends around the eastern edge before following the northern boundary west, with glimpses of farmland through the trees. Turn into West Ride, cross the central rides and continue towards the woodland ponds, then follow the southern paths back to the entrance. This circuit explores different parts of the wood and its grassy rides, with only the short entrance path shared on the way out and back.

Brampton Wood is Cambridgeshire's second largest ancient wood. Oak, ash, aspen, birch and field maple grow here, and the broad rides give a different view of the woodland from the narrower boundary paths. Bluebells and other woodland flowers are seasonal; in autumn there are fungi along the paths. Leave plants, fungi, fallen timber and wildlife undisturbed.

Allow about two hours and fifteen minutes for the roughly six-kilometre walk with short stops. The terrain has gentle gradients, grassy rides and compacted earth paths. The clay ground can be muddy and slippery and sometimes floods after wet weather, so walking boots are useful. Keep to the established paths, take care by the ponds and streams, and keep dogs on leads throughout the reserve. There are no toilets or refreshments on the route; bring water and use facilities in Brampton before arriving.

The car park is small. Park within the parking area without blocking the entrance. Reserve entry is free. Access is permissive and the Wildlife Trust can close paths for conservation work or wet conditions; check the current reserve updates and entrance notices before setting out, and do not pass a closure sign.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
