About this walk
Walk the Alnwick Greenway and surrounding field paths on this 6 km (3.7-mile) circular route. It is graded medium on Walkmates, with an estimated walking time of one hour and 45 minutes. The field and golf-course sections make it a different outing from staying on the Greenway throughout.
A fairly short walk, starting at the grounds Alnwick Junior FC.
It starts by joining the Alnwick Greenway, a disused railway line that was the Alnwick-Wooler (+ Cornhill) line. It's been beautifully restored into a proper walking and cycling path. Follow the greenway, until eventually splitting off over some open grass land. Judging by the signs, there may be cows with calves, or a bull in the field. Though this will be seasonal. Follow the public footpath through the fields, through some gates. You'll see beautiful views down over the Northumberland countryside and towards the coast.
You'll be heading in towards town, though you won't get this far, instead you'll take the path just before the golf club, which will take you on a public way over the golf course. Of course be mindful of balls flying. From here you'll go down the side of the estate, and return to the Alnwick Juniors FC.
It's definitely worth a trip if you have a couple of spare hours. Nothing too strenuous. The fields can get muddy though, so wear appropriate footwear, especially if there's been rain recently.
Enjoy!
A shorter Greenway option
If you want to remain on the Greenway, compare the Friday Greenway Lunch Loop, a roughly 4 km out-and-back route. Check the map and meeting arrangements before travelling; the route's starting point is not a guarantee of permission to use the football club's parking. See the Alnwick walks guide for more choices.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
