About this walk

A compact walk of about 870 metres combines Allenheads' mining heritage precinct with nearby public woodland paths. Allow roughly 25–35 minutes as a walking and short-stop estimate, longer for optional displays. The route retraces its woodland approach and includes a separate short return spur beside the heritage buildings; it is not a circular walk.

Start at the village footway junction beside the Armstrong-engine and heritage precinct. Arrival from your chosen transport or parking place is additional. The exterior visit beside these buildings and the Hemmel provides context for the village's mining history: mineral-rich fluids deposited lead-bearing minerals in underground fractures, and the settlement developed around extracting and processing them. This route does not enter the old mineyard or promise a view of the engine through closed doors. Indoor displays depend on local opening arrangements and are optional.

After returning from the Hemmel exterior, the route uses a short section of the village road to reach the public woodland approach. Watch for traffic, use an available pavement where appropriate, and cross only when you can judge it clear. The map uses the road centreline: it does not mark a protected crossing or direct you to walk in the middle of the carriageway. Service tracks may also carry vehicles.

Follow the public woodland paths to their mapped junction and return the same way. The wider woodland hosts a promoted nature trail; this short route does not claim to visit every artwork or complete that trail. Stay on permitted paths, respect neighbouring private entrances and follow signs and any closures. Woodland surfaces may be uneven or muddy. Step-free access and all-weather surfaces have not been verified. Ascent has not been verified. Parking availability, charges, toilets and café opening are not guaranteed.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
