The summit is adorned with a large stone cairn and offers a Trig Point, where you can safely claim your spot at the top of the world (well, at least the top of Beinn Spionnaidh).
Beinn Spionnaidh is predominantly composed of schist with underlying gneiss, typical of the Scottish Highlands. This ancient rock formation gives way to stunning views and rugged terrain, a true hallmark of its geological history.
From the summit, you can see the vastness of the surrounding Highlands, including Loch Shin and the distant Aeolian hills.
The name 'Beinn Spionnaidh' is derived from Scottish Gaelic, meaning 'Hill of the Wisps', hinting at its mystical beauty, especially in misty weather.
Aside from being a popular Munro for hillwalkers, the mountain has a rich history of local folklore, often linked to legendary figures and stories passed down through generations.
This popular route starts from the A9 near the car park and follows a well-defined path ascending through heather and rocky outcrops.
There is a small car park just off the A9 near NC361572, providing direct access to the starting point of the Main Ridge Route.
The nearest train station is located in Tain, with bus services that connect to the A9, but check schedules as they can be scarce.
Facilities are limited near the mountain. Lairg offers cafes and public toilets. It's a good idea to fill up on snacks and drinks there before you set off.
