At the Summit

The summit features a prominent cairn and a stunning trig point that provides an excellent reference for your photos. If you're lucky, you might even find some friendly sheep lounging nearby.

Terrain & Geology

Rugged and rocky with sections of grassy slopes and occasional boggy patches so keep your boots on tight!

Ben Stack is mainly composed of Lewisian gneiss, a rock type formed over 3 billion years ago, making it one of the oldest geological formations in the UK. This gives the mountain a rugged beauty and striking geology that geologists won't stop ranting about.

Views & Scenery

From the summit, you can see the beautiful Kyle of Tongue, Loch Eriboll, and the dramatic peaks of the surrounding highlands.

Popular Routes

Ben Stack Summit via Southern Approach

Moderate

This is the most well-known and direct route to the summit of Ben Stack. Starting from the car park near A838 (grid reference NC2693642296), follow the faint path heading north, which climbs steadily through heather and grassy slopes. The trail becomes steeper and more rugged as you ascend, but the breathtaking views of Loch Stack and the surrounding peaks make it worthwhile. Navigation is straightforward on clear days, but care should be taken in poor visibility.

7.5 km 3.5 hours

Ben Stack Circular Route via Loch na Seilg

Challenging

This longer circular route offers a more scenic adventure. Begin at grid reference NC2693642296 and head east along a faint path skirting Loch na Seilg. Once past the loch, ascend the eastern slopes of Ben Stack, which are steeper but provide stunning views of the surrounding lochs and mountains. Descend via the southern approach route, completing the loop. This route combines rugged terrain with panoramic vistas.

10.5 km 5 hours

Ben Stack Ascent via Western Ridge

Challenging

The climb is steeper and requires good navigation skills, but it rewards with dramatic ridge views and a sense of isolation. Descend via the southern route to return to the starting point.

8.5 km 4.5 hours

Ben Stack Shorter Ascent for Families

Easy

This shorter route is ideal for families or those looking for a less demanding climb. Begin at grid reference NC2693642296 and follow the southern approach, but instead of continuing to the summit, aim for the prominent viewpoint approximately halfway up. This spot offers excellent views of Loch Stack without the full exertion of a summit climb.

5 km 2 hours

Ben Stack and Arkle Dual Ascent

Very Challenging

For hillwalking enthusiasts, this ambitious route links Ben Stack with the nearby mountain, Arkle. Begin at grid reference NC2693642296 and ascend Ben Stack via its southern approach. After descending, traverse the valley to the base of Arkle and climb its east ridge. This is a long and difficult day, requiring excellent navigation and fitness, but the rewards are unparalleled views of Sutherland's finest landscapes.
