About this walk

Start at the trail board beside the main paid car park, close to the information point and cafe. Follow the purple Firecrest waymarkers for the full woodland circuit, returning to the same trailhead. Allow about two hours with breaks.

The walk leaves the busy visitor area and winds through different parts of the forest, mixing broad tracks with narrower woodland paths. Follow the full purple loop at the signed Firecrest shortcut junction. The southern section curves through the trees before climbing back towards the visitor area. Look for woodland birds, but sightings of the trail's namesake are never guaranteed.

There are exposed roots, a few steps and a steep uphill section beyond halfway. Boots with grip are useful, particularly after rain. Take care where the walking route meets the Juniper cycle trail and the play trail, and follow any forestry diversions on site. Keep dogs under control. This full circuit is unsuitable for a step-free outing; the shorter option has different terrain.

Parking is paid by card at machines near the information point, with an ANPR system. Check the posted closing time before setting out. The woods close at 7pm until 25 October 2026, then at 5pm from 26 October; last car entry is one hour earlier. Choose daylight and leave time to return. Toilets and the cafe are at the start; cafe hours vary.

Route checked against Forestry England's complete trail map and Firecrest visitor guidance on 3 October 2026. Check current notices before travelling: https://www.forestryengland.uk/wendover-woods/firecrest-trail-wendover-woods

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
