About this walk
A countryside circuit from Sturminster Newton, following the River Stour upstream to Cutt Mill and returning through Lower Bagber and the old Stalbridge Lane. The river bends, watermeadows and little footbridges give way to farmland and a quieter lane before the return over Colber Bridge. The mill is a ruined building: enjoy the view from the public path and bridge without entering it.
Start at Station Road public car park, reached from Station Road through Barnes Close. Leave by the pedestrian entrance onto Station Road, walk through the Market Place and take Ricketts Lane to the recreation ground. Follow the riverside Stour Valley Way north, keeping with the river through its bends and crossing the small footbridges on the signed path. At Cutt Mill, use the public bridge and path around the mill, then turn southwest along the public field path towards Pentridge Lane and Lower Bagber. Follow the short village lane sections to Stalbridge Lane, then turn southeast down the old lane past Barnes Oak and across Blackwater Bridge. Take the footpath towards Colber Farm and cross the Stour on Colber Bridge. Return through the recreation ground and Ricketts Lane to the Market Place and car park.
Allow about three hours for the full circuit, including gates, uneven ground and a pause by the river. Stalbridge Lane can be muddy even in dry weather, and the riverside watermeadows are liable to flood. Choose a dry-weather day, wear boots and do not enter flooded paths or try to wade across. There are short road sections in town and through Lower Bagber: watch for vehicles. This is farmland, so close gates and keep dogs under close control around livestock.
Parking is pay and display; check the current signs and allow enough time for the whole walk. Public toilets and places to buy food are in Sturminster Newton. This circuit follows the main countryside loop described in Dorset Council’s Sturminster Newton Walkabout 5, with the town return made along Ricketts Lane.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
