About this walk
An easy 2.1 km circuit through St James's Park, combining the lake's waterbirds with the tree-lined park edge beside The Mall and views towards Buckingham Palace. Allow an hour for a relaxed walk with time on the benches and stops for photographs; the walking alone takes roughly 35 minutes. The route follows established paved paths throughout.
Start just inside Storey's Gate, beside the cafe entrance at the park's south-east corner. Follow the path towards the eastern end of the lake, then continue north around Duck Island and the fountain end. Take the broad path west through the northern park, joining the park-side pavement beside The Mall. Near the western end, turn back into the park and descend to the lake. Round its western tip, then follow the southern lakeside path past the south end of the Blue Bridge. Continue towards Duck Island and return to Storey's Gate. The mapped circuit stays on the park side of the surrounding roads and does not cross the Blue Bridge.
Look for pelicans and other waterbirds near Duck Island, but do not feed or approach them. Keep dogs under control and follow the lead and exclusion signs around the lake. The unfenced water edge needs care with young children, and wet leaves can make paved surfaces slippery. Daylight makes the lake views and route-finding easiest.
Entry is free. St James's Park Underground station is nearby, while the park has no visitor car park. Cafes and public toilets are available subject to opening hours; toilets currently require a small contactless payment. Check The Royal Parks' live notices before travelling, particularly for ceremonies and the 11 October 2026 half marathon. Route and visitor information are based on The Royal Parks' park map and current guidance.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
