About this walk

Start at the northern pedestrian exit of Market Street car park in Llangollen. Follow Market Street east, turn left along Castle Street and cross Llangollen Bridge on its pavement. At the far end use the pavement beside Mill Street to reach Wharf Hill, then climb the lane to Llangollen Wharf. Turn left onto the towpath.

Follow the canal past Llangollen Basin and the Pavilion, beneath Tower Bridge and on past Pentrefelin Bridge. Continue along the shared access lane near Ty-Craig Bridge and the Chainbridge Hotel, watching for vehicles. The towpath then passes beneath King’s Bridge to the canal intake at Horseshoe Falls. Turn around at the falls viewing area and return by the same towpath, Wharf Hill and town streets to the car park. This route does not cross Pontcysyllte Aqueduct or the Chain Bridge.

Allow about 2 hours 15 minutes for the walk and brief stops. Most of the route follows a fairly level towpath, with a short climb through town. Expect narrow waterside sections, uneven or muddy patches and an unprotected water edge. Keep children close, give way to working horses and other path users, and keep dogs under control. View the weir from land and stay out of the River Dee.

Market Street is a public pay-and-display car park, open 24 hours. Charges apply 8am to 5pm; check the board on arrival. Refreshments are available in town and at the Wharf when open. Follow any temporary path signs and check Canal & River Trust notices before travelling. Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
