About this walk

Start in the main National Trust visitor car park at Killerton. Leave by the visitor entrance, cross the lane carefully and follow the surfaced trail through Sparrow Park orchard to Budlake. Use the pavement over the M5 bridge, then turn onto the signed estate trail towards Newhall. At the waymark take the path around the cottage, keeping off the private southern driveway. Continue on the separate path beside the B3181, then turn into Mooredge Lane and the permitted trail through Martinsfield Farm.

Follow the gates and shared surfaced path towards Broadclyst, cross the small River Clyst bridge and take the short orchard path towards Clyston Mill. This is the turning point. Return along the same trail to Killerton. The watermill and orchard give this farmland walk a clear destination, with hedges, estate cottages and open fields along the way.

Allow about 2 hours 30 minutes. The route is mostly flat on surfaced shared paths, with short quiet lane sections. Watch for vehicles at the car park road crossing and on the lanes, and give cyclists and horse riders room. Large puddles can form in wet weather. Keep dogs under control around livestock and close gates.

Killerton parking is pay and display, currently £5.20 for a stay over two hours; National Trust members must check in for free parking. Check the car park signs and allow time to return before its closing time. Toilets and a coffee shop are at Killerton during opening hours. Clyston Mill is closed for the remainder of the 2026 visitor season, so plan for an outdoor walk rather than an interior visit.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
