About this walk

An unhurried circuit of Hardwick’s upper park, linking Lady Spencer’s Wood, the broad avenue below the hall and views of the Old Hall. The plotted walk is about 3.1 km; allow around 1½ hours for the woodland steps, short climbs and pauses to look across the estate. The distance covers this particular circuit from the current visitor car park.

Start in the main visitor car park east of the hall. Take the pedestrian exit into Lady Spencer’s Wood and follow the woodland path downhill. Near the bottom of the steps, turn left to follow the path north beside the open park. Continue to the broad grass avenue and turn towards the hall, then follow the estate road around the north and west sides. Pass the outside of the Old Hall and continue towards the stableyard. Use the signed pedestrian gate into the western field, follow the established path downhill and return east across the park to the car park. Keep outside the enclosed hall gardens on this circuit.

The route combines woodland paths, grass and short sections of the internal estate road. Steps, roots and wet grass make sturdy footwear sensible; this is not a step-free route. Watch for vehicles on the road, use pedestrian gates beside cattle grids and keep clear of livestock. Dogs must stay on a lead. Follow any temporary diversions or closure signs and check the estate’s closing time before setting off.

Follow the brown visitor signs from the A6175 near M1 junction 29; Hardwick gives S44 5RW for arrival. Check current admission arrangements: the estate offers a wider-estate and stableyard ticket, with parking included; National Trust members enter free. Hall and garden admission is separate from the scope of this walk. The Great Barn café and toilets are in the stableyard, close to the western part of the circuit; check opening hours if relying on them.
