About this walk

Start at the main public pay-and-display car park at Goytre Wharf, off Old Abergavenny Road. Walk down the wharf access road past the lime kilns, go beneath the aqueduct and take the steep ramp onto the towpath. Head south across the aqueduct and follow the canal to Pentre Bridge, number 67. Return by the same towpath and ramp to the car park.

The outward route passes Saron Bridge, the stone steps at Penyrheol Bridge, both Park-y-Brain bridges, Birdspool, High House and Croes-y-Pant. Look for the old railway weight-limit signs on the bridges and the original canal mileposts. The lime kilns at the wharf date from 1810.

Most of the walk is gently graded, surfaced towpath, with gravel and compacted sections. The initial ramp is steep and bridge approaches can be narrow. Keep back from the water, supervise children and dogs, and leave space for cyclists and other towpath users. Allow about 2 hours 15 minutes for the return, including a short pause at the wharf.

Parking is pay and display. The operator lists the entrance barrier as open from 7am to 9pm; check the current tariff and closing signs before setting out. Cafe and toilet availability depends on opening hours. Check Canal and River Trust notices before travelling and follow any signed works restrictions. This follows the Trust's published Goytre Wharf to Pentre Bridge walking route, returning to the start.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
