About this walk

Start in the National Trust car park at Flatford, off Flatford Lane, and follow the pedestrian route downhill to Bridge Cottage. This circuit links the River Stour meadows with Dedham and East Bergholt, then returns through fields above Flatford Mill and Willy Lott’s House.

Cross Flatford Bridge and turn right along the riverside path. At Fen Bridge, cross to the north bank and follow the meadow paths west towards Dedham Road. Use the pavement into Dedham, where St Mary’s Church and the village shops provide a useful stopping point. Leave along the track beside Marlborough Head Inn, continue across the fields and small concrete bridge, then return to Fen Bridge. Cross it again and take the path and Fenbridge Lane uphill to East Bergholt.

Visit the village centre and St Mary’s churchyard, including its separate wooden bell cage. Return towards Flatford on the path beside Flatford Lane. At the field junction, head east through the wooded dip and across the small stream, then use the signed path through Flatford Farm. Continue between the paddocks and down the meadow towards Willy Lott’s House. Follow the lane past Flatford Mill and Bridge Cottage before climbing back to the car park.

Allow about 2½ hours. Expect grass and earth paths, roots, gates, bridge steps and gentle slopes. Several short lane sections share space with traffic. River meadows can become muddy or flooded after heavy rain; do not enter floodwater and follow any local closure signs. Dogs should stay on leads around livestock.

The car park opens dawn to dusk with no overnight parking. National Trust members park free; the listed non-member car charge is £6. Toilets and a tea room are at Flatford during their opening hours. Route based on the Dedham Vale National Landscape 2026 Constable Country Explorer Guide.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
