About this walk

A full circuit of Carsington Water, following the reservoir trail from the main visitor-centre car park. The plotted walk is about 12.4 km; allow around four hours for the slopes, viewpoints and a break. It suits walkers comfortable with a longer outing rather than a short waterside stroll.

Walk clockwise past the visitor centre and the wooded western creeks towards Sheepwash, then round the northern end and along the quieter eastern shore. The path turns inland around the inlets, including Fishtail Creek, before reaching the short Oldfield Lane connection. Continue south to Millfields and return across the long dam with broad views over the water. Follow the reservoir-side path back to the visitor centre and car park. Keep to the signed reservoir trail and the plotted paths; the water level can expose ground that is not part of the route.

Most of the route uses established surfaced or compacted paths, but there are sustained inclines and uneven sections. Walkers share sections with cyclists: leave room to pass and take care at junctions. Watch for traffic on the short lane section and at car-park entrances. The dam and open shore are exposed in wind and rain, so bring suitable footwear, waterproofs and drinking water. Stay back from the water and follow any local closures; swimming in the reservoir is not permitted. Dogs must be on a lead throughout the site.

Start at the main Carsington Water visitor-centre car park, reached from the signed visitor entrance off the B5035. Entry to the site is free, but parking is charged and uses number-plate recognition. Severn Trent asks visitors to pay before leaving or within 24 hours of the visit. Check the tariff and opening times on arrival, especially for a late finish. The visitor centre has toilets and refreshments; there are also facilities at Millfields, subject to their opening hours. The circuit returns to its starting car park.

Route based on Severn Trent’s Carsington Water Reservoir Trail map, with the main visitor-centre car park used as the start and finish. Practical information follows Severn Trent’s visitor guidance. Check the current site notices before setting out.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
