A woodland walk through Bradfield Woods National Nature Reserve, following the Suffolk Wildlife Trust orange trail from the free reserve car park on Felsham Road, Bradfield St George. Allow about 2½ hours at the Trust’s nature-trail pace, with time to look at the coppice, woodland plants and butterfly glades. The route is about 4 km rather than a long-distance hike.
Walk south into the reserve from the Green Oak Centre area, then take the orange-marked trail west past the Pole Barn. Follow the woodland ride south and the connecting path into Monkspark Wood. Cross the small footbridge on the northern part of that loop, continue around Hannah’s Close and Cottage Fell, then follow the southern woodland edge back to the connecting path. Retrace that short connection to the main wood, turn towards the Fish Pond Fell side and follow the diagonal ride through the butterfly-glade junctions. Return north on the main entrance ride to the car park. Keep following orange waymarks at the close junctions rather than taking the blue eastern circuit or village footpaths.
Bradfield Woods has been managed by coppicing since 1252. Different stages of regrowth create a varied woodland, with open rides between densely growing coppice. These are natural woodland paths with roots and muddy sections after rain, so wear walking footwear. The Trust lists this reserve as unsuitable for wheelchairs. Keep dogs on a lead and respect any local signs for coppicing work or seasonal grazing.
Entry and parking are free. The reserve is open all year; the education centre opens for events. A picnic area and toilets are listed by the Trust. Larger organised groups should contact the reserve in advance. Pick up the current trail guide at the entrance and check local notices before setting off.
