About this walk

Start at the entrance to Benthall Hall’s visitor car park near Broseley. This short, 1.6 km circuit follows the chestnut avenue and the meadow paths beside Moon Pool, with views back towards the Hall and church. Allow about an hour for a relaxed outing with pauses to look across the park; continuous walking will take less time.

Cross carefully from the car park to the signed parkland gate. Follow the track to the chestnut avenue, turn right down the avenue, then go through the pedestrian gate. Turn left on the marked path through the wild area and willow copse. Continue around the meadow edge towards Moon Pool, keeping to the walking path rather than approaching the water. Pass through the small copse by the lane and return uphill along the field edge to the car park. This circuit uses the established meadow loop, without the extra seasonal orchard or orchid wander paths.

Grass paths, muddy ground and pedestrian gates make this a countryside walk rather than a surfaced park stroll. Wear sensible footwear, particularly after rain, and stay on the marked paths through grazing fields. Keep dogs on leads near cattle and sheep and close gates behind you. The chestnut avenue is shared with other path users. Take care at the short lane crossing by the car park and leave room for horses and cyclists on the approach track.

Parking is charged for non-members; National Trust members must register their parking entitlement using the on-site arrangements. The countryside route does not require a house or garden visit. Check current car park times and return before dusk. The Shepherd’s Shed kiosk in the car park serves takeaway refreshments when open. Toilets are for Hall and garden visitors during property opening hours, so do not assume they are available just because the walking route is open. The National Trust recommends approaching via Broseley or Much Wenlock and following its brown signs to avoid unsuitable narrow roads.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
