5 walks around Alnwick, from town loops to Hulne Park
Alnwick gives you several ways to spend a few hours on foot.
Alnwick gives you several ways to spend a few hours on foot. You can stay close to town, follow a railway footpath or make a longer outing through Hulne Park. The useful question is how much of the day you want to give the walk, and whether you want a landmark to aim for or a loop that brings you back for lunch.
These five Walkmates routes offer different answers. Distances and times below are the figures shown on the linked route pages when checked on 19 October 2026. Times are estimates, so leave room for your own pace and stops. Open the full map before deciding which walk fits your day.
1. Alnwick Pastures: a town-and-country introduction
Listed distance: 3.8 km / 2.4 miles. Estimated time: 45 minutes. Circular.
The Pastures route combines a walk through open ground with a return through town and Denwick Lane. It earns its place here because it makes an Alnwick outing feel more varied without asking you to commit to one of the longer estate routes. Choose it when you want to include a walk in a day already spent exploring town. The listed 45 minutes is a walking estimate, so allow extra if you want to pause or make other stops on the way.

2. Aln Valley Railway Footpath: a different side of Alnwick
Listed distance: 4.2 km / 2.6 miles. Estimated time: 1 hour. Circular.
The railway footpath gives this shortlist a different focus from the town centre and estate landmarks. Walkmates lists a compact circular outing, making it a useful option when you have a limited window and want a route with a clear plan. Use the linked footpath circuit for this shorter outing; the railway also has a longer alternative-return walk. Check the starting point before heading out from town.

3. Hulne Park Red Route: parkland with a priory stop
Listed distance: 8 km / 5 miles. Estimated time: 3 hours. Circular.
The Red Route gives you a longer outing through Hulne Park, with the River Aln, woodland and open parkland providing variety and Hulne Priory giving the walk a natural stopping point. Pick this one when you want the walk itself to be the main part of your afternoon. Its appeal is the combination of a loop and a historic landmark, with time to slow down at the ruins. Plan the start carefully: the park's opening window matters just as much as the walking estimate.

4. Hulne Park Yellow Route: a walk towards Brizlee Tower
Listed distance: 6.6 km / 4.1 miles. Estimated time: 2 hours 30 minutes. Out-and-back.
Choose the Yellow Route if you prefer a clear landmark as your reason to walk. This mapped outing heads towards Brizlee Tower through estate grounds, with wooded and open sections described on the listing. It offers an alternative to the Red Route's priory focus, rather than an extra section to add automatically. Check the outward and return paths together, and remember that reaching the tower does not guarantee access inside it. Both Hulne routes need to fit within the estate's visitor hours.

5. Alnwick Ale Gate Loop: a walk with a town finish
Listed distance: 3.4 km / 2.1 miles. Estimated time: 1 hour 10 minutes. Circular.
This loop starts and finishes at the Ale Gate, taking in Bondgate Without, Denwick Lane and the riverside past the castle before returning through town. It is the shortest listed option here and has an obvious meeting point if you are arranging a walk with someone else. There is some overlap in character with the Pastures route, so choose between them according to the start and finish that suit your plans. If refreshments are part of the outing, check the venue's opening arrangements separately.

Choose your walk, then check the gate times
For a shorter outing, compare the Pastures, railway footpath and Ale Gate maps. For a longer park walk, choose between the Red Route's priory and the Yellow Route's tower. Northumberland Estates gives Hulne Park's usual hours as 11am–4pm, with additional closure dates, and says dogs and cyclists are not permitted. Check its latest notices and finish before the gates close.
