The summit is crowned with a modest cairn that provides a perfect excuse for a photo op. It’s a great place to catch a breather and soak in the surroundings.
Sgurr Ban is primarily composed of granite and schist, which were formed over 400 million years ago. The area showcases typical highland geology, with interesting geological features such as ancient glacial remnants.
From the summit, you can see the breathtaking Ardgour hills, Loch Leven, and further afield to Ben Nevis on a clear day. A photographer's dream!
The name 'Sgurr Ban' translates to 'White Peak' in Gaelic, likely referring to its snow-capped summit during winter months.
The area is rich in Scottish heritage, with numerous historical sites in the vicinity, including remnants from the Jacobite uprisings.
Starting from Ballachulish, this route provides a scenic ascent up the west ridge, offering stunning views as you climb. Expect a mix of paths and some rough patches.
There is a small car park at the southern end of Ballachulish, which is approximately 5 km from the trailhead. Parking here is free but can fill up quickly during peak seasons.
Buses run from Fort William and Oban to Ballachulish. Check the local service for specific times.
Ballachulish has a few cafes and a pub for refreshments after your hike. Toilets are available in the village.
