Terrain & Geology
Schiehallion is primarily composed of Silurian schist and granite, creating a distinct pyramidal shape that's often described as the quintessential Scottish hill. The mountain's unique geology has drawn scientists and geographers alike due to its historical significance in the measurement of the Earth's mass.
Views & Scenery
From the summit, you can spot the vast Loch Rannoch, the rugged peaks of the surrounding Grampians, and even distant glimpses of the Ben Nevis range on a clear day.

Name Origin
The name 'Schiehallion' comes from the Gaelic 'Sìdh Chailleann', meaning 'the Mountain of the Fairy Calley'. It seems fairies were quite fond of their view!

Schiehallion via the Braes of Foss Path
ModerateThis is the most popular and well-maintained route up Schiehallion. Starting from the car park at Braes of Foss, the path ascends gradually through heather moorland before reaching a steeper and rockier ridge that leads to the summit. The route offers stunning views of Loch Rannoch and the surrounding landscapes.
Schiehallion from the West
ChallengingThis less-trodden route begins near the western end of Schiehallion, accessed via a track from Kinloch Rannoch. The ascent involves navigating through open moorland and rougher terrain, joining the main ridge before reaching the summit. This approach provides a quieter experience compared to the Braes of Foss Path.
Circular Route via Braes of Foss and Gleann Mor
ChallengingThis circular route combines the popular Braes of Foss ascent with a descent into the scenic Gleann Mor valley. After summiting Schiehallion, the descent tracks down the eastern flank, heading into the glen and eventually looping back to the starting point. A great option for those seeking variety in scenery.
Schiehallion Traverse
HardA full traverse of Schiehallion, starting at the west end near Kinloch Rannoch and finishing at the Braes of Foss car park. This route involves navigating the entire ridgeline, offering spectacular panoramic views throughout. Logistics for transport at either end are required.
Winter Ascent via Braes of Foss
HardThis route follows the standard Braes of Foss path but is tailored for winter conditions. With the right equipment (crampons and ice axe) and experience, this route is a rewarding challenge, offering a snow-covered perspective of Schiehallion and its surroundings.
