At the Summit

The summit boasts a prominent cairn and a trig point, both favourite spots for selfies and a much-deserved snack break.

Terrain & Geology

Variable; rocky and grassy with some boggy patches - beware of the infamous 'Soggy Bottom'!

Primarily composed of Old Red Sandstone, forming impressive ridges and steep slopes. This ancient rock has weathered beautifully, giving rise to some stunning scenery and a few dodgy footings!

Views & Scenery

From its summit, expect breathtaking views of the Beacons, the Black Mountains, and on a clear day, even as far as the Bristol Channel.

This is the most popular and straightforward route to Pen y Fan, starting from the Storey Arms Outdoor Centre. On a clear day, the views from the summit are spectacular, offering vistas across the Brecon Beacons and beyond.

This route starts near the Neuadd Reservoirs and offers a challenging but rewarding circular hike. The trail includes ascents of Pen y Fan, Corn Du, Cribyn, and sometimes Fan y Big, making it ideal for experienced walkers. The route features ridge walks, steep climbs, and breathtaking views of the Beacons' dramatic landscape.

Part of the long-distance Beacon Way, this route to Pen y Fan starts from the Taf Fechan forest. The trail winds through woodlands before emerging onto the open moorland and joining the main ridge.
