The most popular ascent of Stob Dubh begins at the car park near Altnafeadh on the A82. From here, follow the well-trodden path into Coire Raineach, climbing steadily alongside a stream. The path eventually reaches a bealach (NN188535), where you turn left to ascend the ridge leading to Stob Dubh’s summit. The views from the top are spectacular, offering panoramas of Glen Etive and the surrounding peaks.

Circular Route via Stob Coire Raineach

Moderate

This circular route includes both summits of Buachaille Etive Beag. Start at the car park on the A82 and follow the path into Coire Raineach. Reach the bealach (NN188535) and first ascend Stob Coire Raineach for breathtaking views of Glen Coe. Retrace your steps to the bealach, then head south along the ridge to ascend Stob Dubh. Descend back to the bealach and return to the car park via the same path.

Glen Etive Ascent

For a less common approach, begin from Glen Etive at a parking area near Invercharnan (NN169494). Follow the path into the northern section of Glen Etive, then ascend the steep grassy slopes towards the ridge between Stob Dubh and the bealach with Stob Coire Raineach. From the ridge, turn north to reach the summit of Stob Dubh. Retrace your steps for the descent.

Extended Ridge Traverse

This longer route is ideal for experienced walkers seeking a full exploration of Buachaille Etive Beag. Start at the A82 car park and ascend via Coire Raineach to the bealach (NN188535). First, head north to summit Stob Coire Raineach, then return to the bealach and continue south along the ridge to Stob Dubh. From here, extend your descent by heading southeast into Glen Etive, completing a loop back to your starting point via a path through the valley.

This seasonal route follows the same path as the Coire Raineach Route but includes challenges specific to winter conditions. The reward is stunning snow-covered views over Glen Etive and the surrounding peaks.
