Challenging

This classic route starts in Ballachulish (Grid Ref NN083584). Follow the forestry tracks westward, ascending through woodland until the ridge is gained. Head west along the ridge to reach Sgorr Dhonuill. After summiting, continue along the ridge to include Sgorr Dhearg for a full horseshoe experience. Descend via the Coire Riabhach path back to Ballachulish.

Direct Ascent from Gleann a' Chaolais

Moderate

Begin at the forestry car park near the bridge (Grid Ref NN056592). Follow the forestry track into Gleann a' Chaolais, turning onto a steep, well-defined path that climbs through the forest and emerges onto open hillside. Continue up the ridge to Sgorr Dhonuill. Return the same way.

Sgorr Dhonuill from South Ballachulish

Moderate

Starting from South Ballachulish (Grid Ref NN044600), follow the forest path southwest through Coire Sgreamhach. After emerging from the trees, ascend the steep ridge leading to Sgorr Dhonuill. Return by retracing your steps.

Coire Dearg Loop

Challenging

Park in Ballachulish and head southwest into Coire Dearg. Ascend steeply to the col between Sgorr Dhonuill and Sgorr Dhearg. First, summit Sgorr Dhonuill, then return to the col and optionally continue to Sgorr Dhearg. Descend back into Coire Dearg and return to the starting point.

Winter Traverse of Sgorr Dhonuill

Very Challenging

For experienced winter walkers, start from Ballachulish. Ascend via the forestry path to the ridge and follow it to Sgorr Dhonuill. The ridgeline can be narrow and exposed in snowy conditions, requiring crampons and ice axe. Descend the same way or continue to Sgorr Dhearg for a winter horseshoe.

There is a small parking area at the foot of the mountain near the village of Ballachulish. Spaces can fill up quickly in summer, so it’s advisable to arrive early or be ready to park a wee bit further away.
