About this walk

The walk starts in the upper Linhope valley on easy ground, following a clear track with the burn close by. It is a straightforward beginning, allowing you to make steady progress without effort. The hills sit back at first and the walking is relaxed.

The route passes close to Linhope Spout but does not go directly to it. The waterfall is just off the line of travel and easy to ignore on the outward leg. You can hear it, but the path continues upstream and upward, which suits the day better with the main climb still ahead. The spout works well as an optional detour on the return if time and energy allow.

Beyond this point, the valley opens out and the walking becomes more upland in character. The path fades into rough grass and heather, with fewer clear features on the ground. Height is gained steadily rather than abruptly, but the effort accumulates. Navigation is generally not bad in clear conditions, helped by fences and broad slopes, though it feels exposed once you leave the valley behind. Even so, this is a long distance walk over paths that are not always obvious. Map and compass skills should be expected.

The climb onto Hedgehope Hill is sustained and can feel long, especially in wind or poor weather. Underfoot conditions vary between firm grass and softer ground, with occasional boggy sections. There is no technical difficulty, but it rewards a measured pace and patience.

The summit is broad and open, marked by a cairn. Views extend across the Cheviots and into the surrounding valleys, particularly on a clear day within Northumberland National Park. It is a good place for a short stop rather than a long linger if conditions are cold or windy.

The return follows the same line. Descending is easier on the legs but still requires care on tired ground. If conditions are good, the short diversion to Linhope Spout is worth taking on the way back, offering a distinct point of interest late in the walk without adding much distance.

Overall, this is a solid Cheviot hill walk. It is simple in shape, physically demanding in places, and best approached with respect for weather and distance rather than treated as a casual outing.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
