Popular Routes

North Ridge Ascent

Challenging

The classic scramble route up Tryfan. Starting from the car park near Ogwen Cottage at SH664056, ascend the iconic North Ridge. This route is a Grade 1 scramble, requiring hands-on climbing in places, and takes you past famous features like the Cannon Stone. The summit is marked by the Adam and Eve monoliths, where the daring can attempt the famous leap.

Heather Terrace Route

Moderate

A less exposed route that skirts around the east side of Tryfan. Starting from the same car park, head south to join the Heather Terrace at SH666055. Follow the terrace path before ascending to the summit via the South Ridge. This option avoids the most difficult scrambling sections but still offers some steep sections and requires good navigation skills.

South Ridge Ascent

Moderate

Approach Tryfan from the south via Llyn Ogwen. Begin at SH664056 and follow the path along the western side of the mountain to meet the South Ridge. This route is less technical than the North Ridge but still offers some scrambling and stunning views as you ascend to the summit.

5.5 km 3.5 hours

Tryfan and Bristly Ridge Circuit

Very Challenging

A more advanced circular route combining the North Ridge ascent of Tryfan with a descent down the South Ridge and a traverse of Bristly Ridge. This route includes technical scrambling and is best suited for experienced climbers. Return via the Miner’s Track along Cwm Bochlwyd.

Tryfan and Glyder Fach Traverse

Very Challenging

A full-day adventure that combines Tryfan with the neighbouring Glyder Fach. Ascend Tryfan via the North Ridge, then descend to Bwlch Tryfan and tackle the Grade 1 scramble up Bristly Ridge to Glyder Fach. Return via the Miner’s Track. This route offers a mix of scrambling and spectacular views of Snowdonia.

Llyn Ogwen Carpark offers ample parking space and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Public Transport

Regular bus services connect from Bethesda and Bangor to the nearby Ogwen Valley.

Nearby Facilities

No toilets on the mountain itself, but you'll find plenty in Ogwen Valley or Bethesda. A couple of cafes are also available for that post-hike treat!
