Alnwick Town Heritage Trail

A short circuit through the old streets of Alnwick, with towers, drinking fountains and the castle gateway along the way. Start outside the Playhouse and use the pedestrian arch beside Bondgate Tower to reach the Market Place. Continue through Paikes Lane and Narrowgate to Pottergate Tower, then follow Northumberland Street and Bailiffgate past St Michael's Church to the castle entrance.

Return through Fenkle Street and the narrow passage into Chapel Lane. Short return spurs visit St Paul's Church and the former Sion Meeting House before Green Batt and Dovecote Lane lead towards Barter Books. Bondgate Without brings you back to the Playhouse.

Allow about an hour and a half for a leisurely walk and stops. Expect cobbles, narrow pavements, road crossings and some slopes. Town-centre improvement works continue into autumn 2027, so follow local pedestrian signs around working areas. Greenwell Road public car parks are nearby; check the bay signs and parking-disc requirements. Cafes and public toilets are available in town.
